Division I – 4-H Livestock

Permission must be given for any trailer or camper to be parked within the Fair gates, please call the Fair Board Office at 410-535-0026 to register.  SPACE IS LIMITED

 

 

GENERAL LIVESTOCK RULES

 

1.  All livestock must meet the health requirements of the Maryland State Department of Agriculture and must have a valid health certificate. Health forms must be presented before animals are unloaded.  Please see the Health Requirements beginning on page 32 for complete information.

 

2.  Livestock will be received on Tuesday from noon to 8 p.m.  Check-in is required.  After animals have been checked by veterinarian and/or livestock superintendent and after animals have been unloaded, you must check-in with Gail Hatfield.  Animals must be on the grounds by 8 p.m. Tuesday of the Fair Week and shall remain until released at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday.

 

3.  All 4-H livestock must be owned by the 4-Her and registered with the County 4-H office as a 4-H project. A Maryland State 4-H eartag must be displayed on all Market animals.  All animals must be eartagged or tattooed prior to unloading.  No animals will be allowed to unload without proper identification.

 

4.  ALL market lambs must be slick-shorn BEFORE they arrive on the fairgrounds.  This is a mandate by the State and no exceptions will be made.

 

5.  No exhibitor under the age of 8 (actual age) will be allowed to show.

 

6.  No late registrations will be accepted.

 

7.  Breeding animals are not permitted in market classes.

 

8.  All exhibitors must wear the appropriate 4-H show attire during the show and auction.  This includes safe, closed toes shoes.  Soft shoes such as Crocs are not permitted.
DAIRY and DAIRY GOATS:
  4-H Boys - green or white slacks, white shirt with green or black tie.
  4-H Girls - white shirt, green or white skirt or slacks with green or black tie.
LIVESTOCK (Beef, Sheep, Swine & Meat Goats):
  4-H Boys - White, khaki or green slacks, khaki or white shirt with green or black tie or bolo.
  4-H Girls - White shirt, white, khaki or green skirt or slacks with green or black neck piece.

 

9.  Market livestock weight requirements for 4-H Auction:
     Market Steer - minimum 1000 lbs.
     Market goats - minimum 40 lbs.
     Market lambs - minimum 80 lbs.
     Market swine - minimum 210 lbs.

 

10.  The Fair Board and/or the Livestock Committee Chairman reserves the right to refuse any entry which it feels does not meet the intent of these requirements. The right is also reserved to cancel, combine or alter, any class, which it feels, will enhance or better our fair and livestock show.

 

11.  All livestock exhibited must have been owned/raised by the exhibitor according to the 4-H rules for each species.

 

12.  All market class animals must have MD 4-H ear tags to be eligible for these classes. Any animal entered in the 4-H market animal classes MUST go to the 4-H Livestock Auction on Saturday evening.

 

13.  For Calvert County 4-H’ers, no more than 4 market animals per species may be offered in the auction.  Weigh-in for market animals will held Wednesday evening at approximately 6:00.  There will be no re-weighs of any animal.   For all other county 4-H’ers, the limit is 1 market animal per species for the auction, except steers.  No out of county steers will be allowed in the auction.

 

14.  Each seller of livestock will be assessed a mandatory federal checkoff deduction.  The funds will be collected and submitted to the federal entity in charge of the program for each species by the Livestock Auction Committee of the Calvert County Fair Board.   As of 2/1/09, the checkoff assessments are assigned as follows:

Beef  -  $1/head

Pork  -  Market Value x .004

Lambs  -  Live weight of animal x .005

 

15.  If there is any evidence of prolapse in any animal, the animal will be sent home.

 

16.  Animals will not be admitted unless they have an eartag or tattoo.

 

17.  Pens must be cleaned and cattle areas cleaned at departure or premiums will be forfeited.

 

18.  4-H members enrolled in animal science projects shall, at all times, conduct themselves with honesty and good sportsmanship, including while with their projects and at all 4-H animal science activities and events.  Their conduct should always reflect the highest standards of honor and dignity to promote the advancement of 4-H and its animal science program.  4-H members, as well as parents, MCE volunteers and others working with them, are under an affirmative responsibility to do more than avoid improper conduct or questionable acts; and their conduct and values must serve as a positive influence on others.

 

19.  All 4-H livestock show participants are expected to have read and understand the MCE 4-H Code of Animal Science Ethics and an enrollment statement must be signed by each 4-H’er and his or her parent or guardian.  A copy of this signed statement must be on file at the 4-H office prior to the Fair.  The standards outlined in the MCE 4-H Code of Animal Science Ethics will serve as the Code of Ethics for the livestock shows at the Calvert County Fair.  A copy of the Code of Ethics may be obtained at the 4-H office or at the Fair Board main office during the Fair.

Section YB - Sheep

Barrows do not have to be registered or purebred

Section YE - Poultry and Rabbit Department
All Rules and Regulations for the Junior Poultry Department are the same as Adult, except that the DANISH SYSTEM of judging will be used.. Refer to the Adult Section or Contact Janice Eiler, 443-404-8887 for more information and registration forms.
