4-H & Youth Rules and Special Awards

The Danish System will be used for judging in the 4-H and Youth Department (except livestock).
 
RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR 4-H AND YOUTH DEPARTMENTS
 
1. This department is open to all boys and girls (4-H members and non-4-H members) in the five (5) Southern Maryland Counties. Some contests will be open to 4-H members only.
 
2. All exhibitors must be 6 to 18 years old as of January 1 of the current year. (4-H Clover Club members may be 5 years old.  4-H Clover Club Projects will be displayed in one area.  These items will be judged for participation only - NO premiums will be awarded.)
 
3. Department chairpersons and judges reserve the right to disqualify any exhibit not meeting fair show standards, or subdivide any classes as appropriate.  All 4-H and Youth exhibits must be show quality, exhibiting neatness, completeness, and a high grade of workmanship.
 
4. The age of the exhibitor will be considered by the judges.
 
5. THE DECISION OF THE JUDGES IS FINAL.
 
6. All exhibits must have been made or processed since last year’s fair and must be the work of the exhibitor.
7. A 4-H and Youth exhibitors must have an entry number. Numbers may be obtained in the 4-H building on entry day.
 
8. All other “General Rules and Regulations” of the Fair will be followed in this department.
 
9. All large livestock will be received on Wednesday from noon until 8 p.m. Health papers must be in order.
 
10. ONE ENTRY PER CLASS.
 
11. Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons are awarded to Calvert County residents and/or Calvert County 4-H members. (Livestock and contests exempt may be divided into the following age groups: 6-7 Pre, 8-10 Juniors, 11-13 Intermediate, 14-18 Seniors).
 
12. The Calvert County Fair, Inc. or the 4-H organization is not responsible for the safety of any exhibit(s). There are no individual lockers available for any exhibit(s).
 
Special Awards
 
TROPHIES AND PLAQUES
 
Sheep, Dairy Goats, Cattle, Swine, Poultry & Rabbits - Plaques for Champion and Reserve Champion.
 
“Best In Show” - In Memory of Charles E. Lindsay.  Chosen from exhibits entered by Calvert County residents within the 4-H/Youth Building, by the Charles E. Lindsay Family.  Awarded to Lindsay Duke in 2006.
 
Compact Tractor Contest, Dog Show - Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
 
All-Star Livestock Award
The name of the recepient of this award is engraved on a plate placed on a plaque donated by the Calvert County 4-H All Stars. It is given to a Calvert County 4-Her in each spieces of livestock (cattle, swine, sheep, and goats) who earns the most points based on 1st and 2nd place awards in all classes shown.
 
The Anna L. Hutchins and Edgar I. Hutchins Awards
The Anna L. Hutchins and Edgar I. Hutchins Awards are given by the Family - Bill, Elaine, Eddie Bradley and Vicki Bradley Valentin. Mr. and Mrs. Hutchins were involved in the fair for over forty years. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hutchins were Fair Board Directors and both exhibited at the fair. Mr. Hutchins showed Polled Hereford Cattle and entered grain in the adult farm building, while Mrs. Hutchins entered canned goods and home arts in the Homemakers Building. Mrs. Hutchins served as a Calvert County 4-H leader for over 20 years. Mrs. Hutchins, her daughter, Elaine, son-in-law, Bill and granddaughter, Vicki, have all been active in the Maryland 4-H All-Star Program.

Edgar I. Hutchins Award - for livestock entries - Crystal Hatfield
 
Tractor Driving Contest:  Date, Time and Location to be announced during the Fair.
 
The Hudson Family Award
This is a memorial award given to remember the loss of Kelli’s 4-H goat project in 2002.  This award is given to a Calvert County 4-H member showing goats at the fair. The 2006 recipients were Casey Denton and Christopher Eiler.
