General Rules and Information
  • Classes are open to all residents of Southern Maryland.
  • Entries will be received on the Monday of Fair Week from 12noon to 8pm, only.
  • Judging will begin at 10am on the Tuesday of Fair Week. Judges reserve the right to reclassify any entry they feel is improperly classed. The decision of the judges is final.
  • Exhibitors are encouraged to bring their best entries. Exhibitors must be sure all entries are exhibited in top notch condition. This includes inspecting cut flowers and sprays carefully and inspecting container grown plants for cleanliness (including the container), unsightly leaves or stems and insects.
  • Exhibitors are encouraged to inconspicuously mark personal property with their name and address. The Flower Department will exercise the utmost care, but cannot be responsible for loss or damage to exhibits or containers.
  • In order to expedite the entry process, please arrive prior to 7:00 p.m. if you have more than 10 entries.The entry process can also be expedited if exhibitors fill out all entry tags and entry forms before coming to the fairgrounds on entry day. Entry tags and forms can be picked up at the fairgrounds.
  • Entries must be removed on the Monday following Fair Week between noon and 8pm. Entries cannot be removed before that Monday. Exhibitors who do not claim their entries and premiums that day forfeit any monies.
  • Exhibitors may enter only one entry in any class or subdivision of a class, unless otherwise specified.
  • The Fair Board Flower Committee reserves the right to combine or subdivide classes as to color, species, variety in size if warranted by the number of entries.
  • Container grown plants and arrangements which received Champion ribbons at last year’s Fair cannot be entered in this year’s show.
  
Divison I-Cut Flowers
 
All cut flowers entries must have been grown by the exhibitor and must have been in the exhibitor’s possession for at least three months prior to the Fair. A $10.00 Grand Champion prize will awarded for each section, sponsored by Floral Expressions.  Foliage is encouraged.

Division III-Arrangements
All arrangements must have been made by the exhibitor. Plant material used in arrangements does not have to be grown by exhibitor. Accessories are permitted in arrangements as needed to strengthen the artistic effect or to carry out a theme. Accessories should be subordinate to design.
  • Fresh plant material to be used in arrangements may include flowers, foliage, fruit branches, berries and vegetables in fresh condition unless otherwise specified. All plant material must be thoroughly conditioned and groomed to retain proper freshness. Cut fruit and vegetables are prohibited. Wilted or unsightly material must be replaced. If not, the Flower Committee will remove the material.
  • Dried plant material is any material from which the water has been removed.
  • Treated plant material is any material that has had the surface, texture, color or substance changed, yet is recognizable as plant material. The change is affected by the application of any substance or agent such as wax, dye, paint, shellac, lacquer, oil, flocking, plastic, spray, dip-dyed, etc., preserved (glycerinized), skeletonized or bleached. Treated dried material may be used in any design or class of the Flower Show.
